Skin Concerns
Thin Lips
While some people may have naturally thin lips, they can also be a sign of ageing, sun exposure or a result from smoking. As you get older the collagen in your lips breaks down and the muscles tire, leaving your lips looking and feeling thinner. This can also lead to wrinkles around the lips.

Dermal Filler
Lip fillers are injected into the lip in the form of a vial. A vial is simply a measurement of injectable liquid administered during the treatment. Typically a lip filler treatment would require one or two vials, depending on the effect that needs to be created. At The London Skin Clinic we use a number of TGA Approved brands to create volume, re-contour or add definition to the lips. These contains Hyaluronic acid, a substance which naturally occurs in the body and so it’s completely safe to use.

Loss of Collagen and Elastin
- Collagen provides structure and volume, while elastin maintains elasticity.
- As we age, collagen production slows dramatically, especially after the age of 30.
- This leads to deflated, thinner lips and less definition, particularly along the vermilion border (the edge of the lips).
Decreased Hyaluronic Acid
- Hyaluronic acid naturally keeps lips hydrated and plump.
- With age, HA levels decrease, causing lips to appear dry, wrinkled, and deflated.
Fat Redistribution & Volume Loss
- Subcutaneous fat (including in and around the lips) thins out and shifts.
- This results in a loss of lip fullness, and the corners of the mouth may begin to turn downward.
Bone Resorption (Structural Changes)
- The jawbone and maxilla (upper face bones) shrink and recede with age.
- This loss of bony support means the lips have less projection, making them look smaller and flatter.
Repeated Facial Movements
- Years of speaking, eating, and expressing emotions cause repetitive muscle contractions around the lips.
- Over time, this contributes to fine lines (e.g. smoker’s lines) and a general tightening or thinning of the lip tissue.
Sun Exposure & Lifestyle Factors
- UV damage breaks down collagen and accelerates aging.
- Smoking, dehydration, and poor nutrition can also speed up the thinning process.
The Visible Result:
- Lips appear narrower, less defined, and less hydrated
- The Cupid’s bow flattens, and vertical lines (perioral lines) become more noticeable
Volume Restoration
Volume restoration treatments may be considered for clients seeking to address changes in facial structure, including loss of volume or the appearance of fine or deeper lines across the forehead.
At The London Skin Clinic, all injectable treatments are performed by qualified professionals using products that are approved for use in Australia. The substances used are based on hyaluronic acid, a compound naturally found in the body. When administered correctly, they integrate with the surrounding tissues to support a natural-looking result.
All treatments involving prescription medicines are only offered after a comprehensive consultation and are subject to individual suitability.
