Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Skin Rejuvenation Therapy
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a non-invasive light-based procedure that uses controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light to target specific areas of the skin.
IPL may be suitable for individuals wishing to address visible concerns such as pigmentation irregularities (including freckles, sun or age spots), redness or broken capillaries, acne-related changes, superficial scarring, or unwanted hair. It may also be used to assist in reducing the appearance of vascular lesions such as spider veins.
At The London Skin Clinic, all IPL procedures are performed using medical-grade devices by trained practitioners following a detailed consultation. During this assessment, your practitioner will discuss your skin goals, review suitability, and outline what you can realistically expect from the treatment.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy delivers controlled pulses of light energy to targeted areas of the skin. This process gently heats the deeper layers of the skin, which can help support natural collagen renewal and may assist in reducing the appearance of visible redness or pigmentation.
IPL is commonly used for a range of benign skin concerns, including photodamage, pigmentation irregularities, broken capillaries, and other superficial blemishes.

What is IPL – Intense Pulsed Light Treatment?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a non-invasive, light-based technology that uses controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light to target specific areas of the skin.
It may be considered for individuals wishing to address visible concerns such as uneven pigmentation, redness, or unwanted hair.
IPL can assist in improving the appearance of benign skin concerns including age spots, sun spots, freckles, superficial capillaries, and other surface irregularities.
Some individuals also notice a refreshed skin appearance following treatment, which may be associated with increased collagen activity in the skin’s deeper layers.
How does IPL work?
During an IPL procedure, a trained practitioner applies a specially designed handpiece to the treatment area. The device emits a brief pulse of light energy that is selectively absorbed by pigment and vascular structures within the skin.
This light energy is delivered in a controlled and precise way to help target the chosen area while maintaining surrounding tissue integrity.
Hair-Reduction Treatments
IPL hair-reduction procedures use light energy to target hair follicles during active growth phases. They may help reduce the growth of unwanted hair on areas such as the face, legs, arms, or underarms.
Multiple sessions are typically required for best outcomes, and your practitioner will recommend a plan suited to your skin and hair type.
Pigmentation & Tone
IPL may help reduce the visible appearance of freckles, sun spots, or areas of uneven pigmentation.
Common treatment areas include the face, forearms, décolletage, and backs of hands. The number of sessions varies depending on individual skin characteristics and goals.
Skin Appearance & Rejuvenation
Over time, environmental exposure and sun damage can contribute to changes in skin tone and texture. IPL can assist in improving the overall appearance of the skin by targeting irregular pigmentation and supporting a more balanced complexion.
Your practitioner will advise if this approach is suitable for your individual skin needs.
Redness & Vascular Appearance
For those experiencing visible redness or superficial facial veins, IPL may assist by targeting areas of vascular prominence.
A series of sessions may be recommended to achieve a noticeable improvement in skin clarity.
Acne-Prone or Congested Skin
IPL may also be used as part of an acne-management program. The light energy targets specific bacteria on the skin’s surface and can help support a clearer complexion when combined with a suitable skincare plan.
Treatment schedules vary depending on skin type and response.
What to Expect During Treatment
Before treatment, protective eyewear will be provided. A chilled handpiece is placed on the skin, and light pulses are delivered in short bursts.
Most clients describe a mild, warm sensation during the procedure. Any post-treatment redness usually settles quickly, allowing normal daily activities to resume soon after.

Post Care

- 48 hours post – Avoid exercise and chlorinated pools
- 72 hours post – Avoid using any active products containing AHA/BHA or retinol.
- Avoid sunlight as much as possible during the healing period.
- Sunlight can prevent your skin from healing properly and can cause new skin damage during this time.
- Too much heat is bad for your skin as it tries to heal and regenerate. You need to keep your body temperature cool. Avoid hot baths or showers for several days after your treatment. Do no do any strenuous exercise during this time, as sweat increases your chances of infection, while potentially delaying the healing process.
- If you have redness, swelling, itching, or burning after an IPL treatment, you can apply aloe vera gel or cold compresses as this will help cool the skin. If these symptoms persist for more than 48 hours, you should contact your doctor.
- Do not apply makeup immediately after an IPL facial treatment. Avoid makeup for 24 hours after treatment.
- Keep skin clean by using a gentle cleanser, only use cold or warm water and gently pat your skin dry as rubbing it can cause further irritation.Always keep you skin protected and hydrated by using a natural based gentle moisturiser.During the week or so following an IPL facial treatment, any pigmented spots in the treated areas may darken in colour before eventually peeling off.
- Other blemishes may also become apparent before they eventually flake off. It is imperative not to scratch or pick at your skin during this time, or you will run the risk of infection, possibly resulting in new scars and imperfections.
